Hyundai India Becomes The Bestselling SUV Brand Of 2021; Maruti Suzuki Leads In UV Sales
While Hyundai Motor India remains the number 1 SUV brand in India with the Creta and Venue ruling the segment, Maruti Suzuki remains the bestselling UV brand including both SUV and MPV sales.
Hyundai Motor India has continued to be the bestselling SUV brand in India for the second year in a row. The company sold over 2.52 lakh SUVs in 2021 where the new-generation Creta continues to be the highest selling SUV not only in the carmaker’s line-up, but across India with over 1.25 lakh units being sold last year. The Hyundai Venue continued to be the second highest selling SUV in the company’s model range with over 1.08 lakh units being sold in 2021. Even the Hyundai Alcazar has been a steady contributor with over 17,700 units being sold in 2021.
But there is a catch, Maruti Suzuki still claims to the bestselling UV brand in the country if we include both SUVs and MPVs. The company sold 2,90,661 units in the January 2021 to December 2021 period including the sales of both Ertiga and XL6 along with the Vitara Brezza and S-Cross. So while the Indian carmaker stands second in terms of SUV sales, it still remains the bestseller if we consider the entire utility vehicle segment. carandbike also got in touch with Tata Motors, Mahindra and Kia Motors among others to check for the third largest SUV maker in India and we are still waiting to hear back from them.
Nevertheless, the rise in the demand of SUVs in a price sensitive market like ours and given the disruptions that the second wave of COVID caused last year is a impressive. Even the industry’s potential to deliver and maintain the supply chain despite battling with the ongoing semiconductor shortage is a positive sign. Moreover, the UV segment has been the most in demand and hotly contested segment over the years and exciting launches last year like the Mahindra XUV700, Tata Punch, Volkswagen Taigun and Skoda Kushaq among others have kept the interest well intact.
Even 2022 looks promising as far as new SUV launches are concerned and we again wait to see the top SUV makers rivalling the likes with newer models. While Hyundai is planning to introduce its new micro SUV in India which will go up against models like the Tata Punch, Maruti Suzuki is gearing up to launch new SUVs as well including the next-gen Vitara Brezza, S-Cross and likely the Jimny too. We also wait for the Mahindra Scorpio to make debut this year and Kia Motors will launch the Carens MPV in India this year.
